STD Screening in Houston, TX

Sexually transmitted diseases are a growing problem in the United States. Routine STD screenings are recommended for teenagers and adults to improve treatment outcomes and quick recovery. North Cypress Women’s Center offers discrete STD screenings for teenagers and adults in Houston and surrounding areas of Texas, including Cypress, Sugarland, and Katy. If you are diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease, our board-certified (gynecological) surgeon, Dr. Farhina Imtiaz, will recommend appropriate treatments.

What is an STD Screening?

Anyone who is sexually active is at risk for contracting a sexually transmitted disease. Even using condoms only reduces your risk; it does not completely eliminate the possibility of transmitting or contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Additionally, STDs can be transmitted via oral, anal and vaginal sex. The STD screening at North Cypress Women’s Center gives you peace of mind about your sexual health.

STD Screening Benefits

Dr. Imtiaz recommends an STD screening for adults and sexually active teenagers for the following reasons:

  • Heath outcomes are greater when disease progression is treated early
  • Some STDs do not cause symptoms in the carrier, so people can transmit the diseases without knowing they are infected
  • Treatment for STDs reduces transmission rates

Why is an STD Screening Recommended?

The STD screening will be recommended if you are sexually active or show symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection. Based on your risk factors and sexual history, Dr. Imtiaz may test you for:

  • Syphilis
  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • HIV
  • HPV
  • Herpes
  • Hepatitis B and C

How is an STD Screening Performed?

Based on your risk factors, Dr. Imtiaz will perform a STD screening that is specific to the suspected STD(s). The test may involve:

  • Taking samples from your mouth, vagina or anus using a special swab
  • Drawing blood
  • Visually inspecting and taking samples from sores and lesions

STD Screening Preparation

When you discuss the possibility of having an STD, you should be completely open with Dr. Imtiaz about your sexual history and partners. The information helps her determine your risk factors.

STD Screening Recovery

Dr. Imtiaz sends the STD screening test to a lab for processing. Once the results come back, she contacts you to recommend treatment if necessary. She will also recommend ways to protect yourself and your partners during sexual activity.

How Much Does an STD Screening Cost in Houston?

STD screenings are covered by medical insurance. The services are usually provided at no cost, but your insurance carrier may determine that you have out-of-pocket expenses. You can pay for your portion of the cost with cash, major credit card or CareCredit® financing.

Is an STD Screening Right for Me?

STD screenings are recommended for teenagers and adults who:

  • Are sexually active
  • Have been exposed to an STD
  • Show symptoms of an STD
  • Have a new partner
