Mammogram in Houston, TX
Mammograms are a key part of women’s breast health. At North Cypress Women’s Center, board-certified (gynecological) surgeon Dr. Farhina Imtiaz recommends mammograms to medically appropriate patients in Houston and surrounding areas of Texas, including Cypress, Sugarland, and Katy.
What is a Mammogram?
A mammogram is a type of X-ray that is used to detect breast cancer in the early stages. The imaging technology has been linked to early diagnosis of breast cancer and also with reduced mortality rates among women. Dr. Imtiaz will use mammograms screening to diagnose any abnormalities in the breasts.
A mammogram allows Dr. Imtiaz to check your breast tissue for any abnormalities. She will recommend a mammogram to:
- Detect any changes in the breasts before there are any symptoms or noted abnormalities
- Evaluate any noted changes, such as discharge, lumps, sources of pain and changes to the nipples
When is a Mammogram Recommended?
Dr. Imtiaz will recommend a mammogram based on several factors:
- Age, with most women having their first mammogram around age 40 and every one to two years thereafter
- Risk for breast cancer, with women who have a family history of the disease or other types of cancer having mammograms before age 40
How is a Mammogram Performed?
For the mammogram procedure, your breast is pressed between two firm surfaces to spread out the breast tissue. Next, a machine takes an X-ray of the tissue. A radiologist will evaluate the quality of the X-rays, as well as the anatomical structures. The results are sent to Dr. Imtiaz for further evaluation.
Dr. Imtiaz will refer you to a reputable facility for your mammogram. You should schedule the appointment when your breasts are not tender. We also recommend that you not wear deodorant on the day of your mammogram.
How Much Does a Mammogram Cost in Houston?
Mammograms are considered preventive by medical insurance, but you may have some out-of-pocket costs. Our patient coordinator will help you understand your coverage and payment options, including cash, major credit card and CareCredit® financing.
Is a Mammogram Right for Me?
The medical community offers several different guidelines for mammograms, but Dr. Imtiaz recommends that you have your first mammogram around 40 years old. She may recommend that you begin sooner if you have certain risk factors. You should have a mammogram every one to two years.
