Urinary Incontinence in Houston, TX

Age, weight, and other factors may put you at risk for developing urinary incontinence, an embarrassing condition that is common amongst men and women in Houston and surrounding areas of Texas, including Cypress, Sugarland, and Katy. Board-certified (gynecological) surgeon, Dr. Farhina Imtiaz of North Cypress Women’s Center, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of urinary incontinence.

What is Incontinence?

Men and women who have urinary incontinence experience episodes of bladder leakage. The amount of urine that escapes the bladder may be just a small amount or a significant volume of urine. People with the condition do not have control over their bladders, so they may leak urine just by coughing or sneezing. Others may have very strong, sudden urges to urinate without enough time to make it to the restroom.

Incontinence Treatment Benefits

The inability to control your bladder when you have urinary incontinence means that you often have wetness and stains on your clothing. The urine may only dampen your underwear, or you may completely soak your clothing. Treatment for incontinence helps you gain control over your bladder so that you no longer have to worry about feeling embarrassed by urine stains. Other problems that arise from untreated incontinence are:

  • Sores, rashes, infections and other skin conditions in the genital area
  • Embarrassment and social anxiety
  • Chronic urinary tract infections
  • Limitations in activities that cause leakage or urine
  • Avoiding activities where you do not have ready access to a restroom

What Causes Incontinence?

Everyone experiences mild, temporary bouts of incontinence, and this is very normal. The medical condition of urinary incontinence refers to a persistent and chronic problem with controlling your bladder. Some of the more common causes of urinary incontinence are:

  • For women, hysterectomy, pregnancy, menopause and childbirth
  • Age
  • Blockages in the urinary tract
  • Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, brain tumor, diabetes, stroke and other medical conditions
  • Repeated activities that increase pressure on your bladder

How is Incontinence Treated?

Dr. Imtiaz recommends treatments for urinary incontinence based on the severity of the condition and any underlying medical conditions. Effective strategies for treating and/or controlling urinary incontinence are:

  • Scheduling restroom breaks, bladder training, “double voiding” and other behaviors
  • Managing fluid intake and nutrition
  • Exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles
  • Medications
  • Treatment with new non-surgical device – ThermiVa™

Dr. Imtiaz may recommend absorbent pads to help keep your genital area dry.

Incontinence Treatment Preparation

The first step in treatment for urinary incontinence is determining if you have an underlying medical condition that needs to be addressed. Dr. Imtiaz may order:

  • Urinalysis and other lab tests
  • Urodynamics
  • Pelvic ultrasound

Keeping a record of your urinary incontinence episodes can also help Dr. Imtiaz determine the cause and recommend the right treatment.

Incontinence Treatment Recovery

The overall goal of treatment for urinary incontinence is to minimize the amount of urine and frequency of your episodes. Dr. Imtiaz will work with you to find a solution that improves your quality of life while managing your bladder control. If she determines that you have an underlying medical condition that causes your loss of bladder control, she may refer you to a specialist for treatment.

How Much Does Incontinence Treatment Cost in Houston?

Medical insurance will help you afford your treatment for urinary incontinence, but you may have some out-of-pocket expenses. We accept payment by cash, major credit card and CareCredit® financing.

Is Incontinence Treatment Right for Me?

If you experience frequent episodes of uncontrollable urinary leakage or lack of control when you are ready to void, you may have urinary incontinence. Dr. Imtiaz determines the reason that you have poor bladder control, and she recommends treatments to reduce your urinary incontinence.
