Fibroids in Houston, TX

Uterine fibroids are not life threatening, but the noncancerous growths in the uterus can cause uncomfortable symptoms and even complications if you are trying to get pregnant. At North Cypress Women’s Center, board-certified (gynecological) surgeon Dr. Farhina Imtiaz treats fibroids for women in Houston and surrounding areas of Texas, including Cypress, Sugarland, and Katy.

What are Fibroids?

Fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop inside or around the uterus. In most cases, fibroids do not require treatment. Women who benefit from treatment experience a variety of symptoms such as heavy, irregular periods, pelvic pain, or have difficulty getting pregnant due to the fibroids

Fibroids Treatment Benefits

Dr. Imtiaz may recommend treatment for your fibroids to help with:

  • Reducing the risk of losing a baby
  • Address problems with infertility
  • Remove them prior to attempting pregnancy
  • Reduce episodes of heavy menstrual bleeding and anemia
  • Minimize abdominal discomfort, leg pain and back pain
  • Treat the cause of your constipation or difficulty urinating

What Causes Fibroids?

An exact cause of fibroids has not been identified, but certain factors place you at greater risk for developing the uterine growths, such as:

  • Beginning menstruation at an early age
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Eating high amounts of red meats
  • Not eating enough green vegetables and fruit
  • Race, with African American women being more likely to have fibroids
  • Genetics

How are Fibroids Treated?

Mild to moderate fibroids typically do not require treatment. If Dr. Imtiaz determines that you have a more advanced case of fibroids, she may recommend:

  • Medications to treat symptoms
  • Non-surgical procedures
  • Minimally-invasive procedures
  • Surgery

Fibroids Treatment Preparation

Diagnosing fibroids may require several tests, such as:

  • Pelvic examination
  • Lab work
  • Ultrasound
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Hysterosonography
  • Hysterosalpingography
  • MRI

Fibroids Treatment Recovery

Women who have a history of fibroids may develop new fibroids. Many treatments leave small traces of the fibroids, and these may grow into larger fibroids.

How Much Does Fibroids Treatment Cost in Houston?

Treatment for fibroids is covered under medical insurance. Our patient coordinator will help you determine your co-payment, deductible, and co-insurance. Payment is expected at the time of your appointment. We accept cash, major credit card and CareCredit® financing.

Is Fibroids Treatment Right for Me?

Your fibroids may only cause mild to moderate symptoms and not require treatment. If you experience severe symptoms of fibroids or if the growths interfere with childbearing, Dr. Imtiaz may recommend treatment.
