Cervical Cryotherapy in Houston, TX

Cryotherapy is an advanced treatment for treating abnormal cells in the cervix that may lead to cervical cancer. At North Cypress Women’s Center, board-certified (gynecological) surgeon Dr. Farhina Imtiaz offers cervical cryotherapy to women in Houston and surrounding areas of Texas, including Cypress, Sugarland, and Katy.

What is Cervical Cryotherapy?

During your gynecology appointment, Dr. Imtiaz may find abnormal cells in your cervix. While these cells do not always require treatment, preventive measures can be used to eliminate precancerous cells and prevent the cells from developing into cancer. Cervical cryotherapy is a safe, effective and quick method of destroying precancerous cells in the cervix.

Cryotherapy Benefits

Cervical cryotherapy has been clinically proven to eliminate precancerous cells in the cervix for 85 to 90 percent of women. The procedure does have some limitations, such as not being effective for targeting abnormal cells that are deeper in the cervical canal.

When is Cryotherapy Recommended?

Dr. Imtiaz may recommend cervical cryotherapy after your colposcopy, Pap test or when a biopsy reveals precancerous cells. While the procedure may not remove all of the abnormal cells, it will greatly reduce your risk of developing cervical cancer.

How is Cervical Cryotherapy Performed?

Cryotherapy is performed much in the same way as your Pap test. You lie comfortably on the examination table, and Dr. Imtiaz inserts a speculum into the vagina. A special instrument known as a cryoprobe is inserted into the cervix. The cryoprobe is at a freezing temperature, and when applied to the cervix, it freezes the abnormal cells. This procedure usually takes about 10 minutes to perform in the office.

Cryotherapy Preparation

Dr. Imtiaz will discuss the results of your Pap test, biopsy or colposcopy to help you understand the findings and the significance of the abnormal cells. She will explain the benefits of cryotherapy, including the limitations of the procedure.

Cryotherapy Recovery

Cervical cryotherapy only takes about five to 10 minutes. Dr. Imtiaz will explain what to expect after the procedure. We recommend that you drink plenty of water to help your body eliminate the cells that were destroyed during the procedure. You may notice a watery discharge from your vagina for several weeks after this procedure. You may need to avoid sex for up to three weeks after cervical cryotherapy.

How Much Does Cervical Cryotherapy Cost in Houston?

Cryotherapy for abnormal cells in the cervix may be covered by your medical insurance. Our patient coordinator will help you determine your out-of-pocket costs after your consultation. We accept payment by cash, major credit card and CareCredit® financing.

Is Cryotherapy Right for Me?

Although cervical cryotherapy is not 100 percent effective in all women, Dr. Imtiaz feels that the procedure is of great benefit to women who have abnormal, precancerous cells in the cervix. With her professional guidance, you are able to feel confident about your choice to undergo cervical cryotherapy.
