Colposcopy in Houston, TX

If you have an abnormal Pap test, board-certified (gynecological) surgeon Dr. Farhina Imtiaz of North Cypress Women’s center may recommend a colposcopy. The procedure is recommended for women in Houston and surrounding areas of Texas, including Cypress, Sugarland, and Katy, to detect any abnormal cells in the vagina, cervix, and vulva.

What is a Colposcopy?

A colposcopy is a diagnostic tool that helps Dr. Imtiaz find abnormal cells in the vulva, cervix, and vagina. The procedure is effective for finding the earliest signs of medical conditions that require treatment. The procedure is performed in our office, so you feel comfortable.

Colposcopy Benefits

Colposcopies are proven to detect many women’s health problems in the early stages, such as:

When is a Colposcopy Recommended?

Dr. Imtiaz typically recommends a colposcopy when she finds abnormal cells or other irregularities during your Pap test and pelvic examination. The procedure gives her a more defined understanding of your condition so that she can recommend an appropriate treatment.

How is a Colposcopy Performed?

The colposcopy procedure takes 10 to 20 minutes, and it is performed in one of our standard examination rooms. You lie on the table in the same way as when you have a Pap test. Dr. Imtiaz places a speculum in the vagina. A medication is applied to the cervix which helps Dr. Imtiaz visualize the abnormal cells on the cervix. She then uses a colposcope to see a magnified view of the cervix, vagina, and vulva.  As part of this procedure, she may collect biopsies to send to the pathologist to confirm the abnormalities on the cervix, vagina or vulva.

Colposcopy Preparation

You should not have a colposcopy when you are on your period, and you should avoid sexual activity for one day before the appointment. Tampons and vaginal medications should not be used for the two days prior to the appointment. At the beginning of the procedure, Dr. Imtiaz swabs the vagina and cervix with a solution that exposes abnormal cells.

Colposcopy Recovery

After your colposcopy, Dr. Imtiaz discusses her findings with you. She may recommend treatments for any conditions she has found. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your progress.

How Much Does a Colposcopy Cost in Houston?

The colposcopy is covered by medical insurance. Our patient coordinator will discuss your coverage, including your out-of-pocket expenses. Payment can be made by cash, major credit card and CareCredit® financing.

Is a Colposcopy Right for Me?

Colposcopies are only recommended when your Pap test or pelvic examination reveals abnormal cells or other issues. Dr. Imtiaz will explain why the colposcopy is necessary and what she anticipates for any follow-up treatments and examinations.
